Overcoming Enterprise Agile PITFALLs

In addition to #AgileDevOpsCon, I recently spoke at the #MileHighAgile conference in Denver where I talked about overcoming PITFALLs in your enterprise agile transformation. I recorded a video of the session that came out reasonably well. I’ve added that to the Artemis YouTube channel if you’d like to check it out.

I do want to thank everyone who came – it was a larger crowd than I expected! – and for all of the great questions and comments. I really appreciate the energy and interest in learning how the non-technology parts of our company can impact – many times negatively – our transformation efforts. And I hope everyone ended up with some takeaways for their company or organization to help smooth over some of those rough edges.

Our Hero – PITFALL Harry

I used the Atari 2600 game PITFALL! as the backdrop for the game, talking about how the pitfalls that Harry encounters are like the ones that we have to deal with. Getting rolled over by our culture, getting bitten by the communications “snake”, falling into the pit of expectations, etc. All of these things can really stymie our transformation efforts. And many times those things happen not out of any fear of change or intentional action, but rather simply because “we’ve always done it that way”. It’s our built-in processes, culture, and mindsets that challenge our ability to deliver to our potential.

Some of the pitfalls we encounter

If you’re interested in seeing the entire presentation, go ahead and click here to see it. I do warn you that it’s a full conference session, so it’s over 50 minutes long! The audio is reasonable (and does get better once they fix my microphone at the 1 minute mark.

The slides are also available for your review here. There is certainly more that I show during the presentation than the slides will provide, but that’s part of why I recorded the session.

Thanks again to everyone who attended my agile conference session. I really appreciate your interest. Best of luck with your enterprise agile transformation!
